It's always amazing to see the abuse that our tools are put through to ensure their
durability. Quality control engineers punish our tools with a battery of tests designed
to push them to their limits.
Below you can see a photo of a Rotex 150 being run while it's pelted with Arizona
sand, considered by scientists to be the most abrasive sand on Earth. Coated in
a thick layer of sand, the Rotex continues to operate.

Extreme test methods and conditions.
Rotex sanders are run constantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for more than 30
days bearing a load of more than 10 pounds. The sanders are tested using sophisticated
test equipment to measure their operating volume. The RO 90 DX was designed to operate
under 77 decibels (dB). Human snoring can reach in excess of 90 decibels (dB). The
sanders are then hooked to a machine that places a simulated load on them. It's
the equivalent of driving your vehicle at full speed in second gear. A crash test
is performed where the sander is slammed around against surfaces and generally abused.
Engineers perform drop tests from various heights. Festool uses a long-strand glass
fiber reinforced high-tech synthetic material plastic which is far more durable
than plastics used in other tools. Finally, they are placed in a chamber and are
run while harsh abrasives are blasted into the tool.
All of this is done to ensure durability and longevity. These extreme conditions
are meant to be far worse than anything the tool will see during normal operation.
Similar testing is done for all Festool power tools. The result... power tools designed
to last a lifetime, providing decades of service.

Sealed metal housing to protect gears.
All three models of the Rotex sander are engineered with a metal housing that completely
seals and encloses the gears. This design blocks foreign particles from entering
the gear housing. Materials like solid surface dust would normally compromise the
integrity of other sanders, but not the Rotex. Also, the gears are made from metal
rather than plastic which is commonly used in other sanders.
